Since it is new, expensive and street legal it will be almost as high as insuring a car plus reg fees which are astronomical. I just went through the same thing with an "ATOMIC" electric but decided to have it dumbed down into a golf cart rather than a Street legal. Insurance went from almost $750 for FULL COVERAGE down to $125 with same coverage and reg for SL was close to $400 for 2 yrs.

The only obvious way is to reduce your coverage down to just about zilch. Remember, in the great State of FL insurance isn't required which is why uninsured motorist coverage on a car is so high because the chances of getting hit by someone with no insurance is probably 50/50.

That's not correct.

Insurance IS required here.

I am registering a vehicle for the first time in Florida. Is automobile insurance mandatory?

Yes. If you own a vehicle with at least four wheels and are registering it, you must have Florida insurance.

What type of insurance is required to purchase and maintain a Florida license plate and registration?

Florida's minimum coverage is $10,000 personal injury protection (PIP) and $10,000 property damage liability (PDL) as long as you have a valid Florida license plate.

Sorry, I stand corrected .... sort-of. Those minimum coverage are like having no coverage and if you see some of the vehicles on the road you can be assured they have the minimum (or none - despite the law). You can't get a band-aid in an emergency room for $10G's of PIP and very little for $10G's of repairs if you mess-up someone else's car. Maybe that's why my agent was trying to explain when she said uninsured/underinsured driver coverage is so expensive.
