Getting ready to move into our home in a few months and trying to determine the best entertainment options. After looking at Comcast for TV and Internet, as well as reading some of the horror stories on TOTV, I believe I've decided that satellite might be the best option. Haven't decided the internet service yet....

Just trying to get an opinion on Dish .vs. DirecTV. Which would you recommend and why. If you have satellite [either one], are you happy with the reception and service?

We are satisfied with Direct TV. We are still snowbirding and we carry our "boxes" back and forth and turn them on and off at each location. It does go out during a severe storm, so we go to the internet and get information.

I've been a DirecTV cust for many years both in TV & in WISC.
I loose signal less here and for shorter duration than I did in WISC.

If you have even a remote interest in sports, DirecTV is the better choice.

I've had Comcast, Verizon FIOS and Dish Network before moving to TV permanently 2 weeks ago. Comcast service is definitely the worst (possibly of any vendor except Sirius) but was followed closely by Verizon.

Customer service with Dish on the other hand has been extremely good for a company that large. It rarely took more than a few minutes to get thru to a live tech support person when needed.

I went with Dish over DirecTV a couple of years ago only because I liked their packages better. Seems DirecTV is more oriented toward sports packages while Dish was more movie-oriented...or at least they seemed that way at the time. Friends up north who had DirecTV seemed to like their service -- it seems they all leapfrog one another when it comes to monthly deals.

Not sure about DirectTV but there is one feature with Dish that I really enjoy -neither Comcast nor FIOS have it. That is their dual-tuner boxes that let you run 2 TV's (1 HD with or w/o DVR and one regular TV) off the same box. They don't have a dual-tuner HD one...yet. The second TV uses a UHF remote so its signal can go thru walls to the box in another room.

So therefore, I have an HD dual-tuner box with DVR that connects to my big HD screen in living room and a smaller TV in office/den and a second HD dual-tuner box (w/o DVR) in the master BR that connects to that room's HD TV and a second non-HD one in BR #2.

I went with Embarq (Century Link) for internet service and no complaints there either. Comcast will never see my money ever again!!

This usually creates a big debate on which service to use. Everyone has their own opinion. I had Dish, went to comcast for a few years and switched to DirecTV 1 year ago. I love DirecTV and would not go back. Service is great, Picture is great. The HD-DVR is really Great. Easy to use Iphone app to set recordings, Easy to use website to monitor your account. You can set the dvr to record from the web site also.

I had Comcast when I moved in about 8 months ago. I didn't like their pricing and found it hard to communicate with them. I switched to Dish TV (still use Comcast for Internet and Phone) and I'm fairly happy, especially with the DVR. The reception goes out in a storm, but comes back fairly fast. Their channel packages are kind of inflexible - I get a lot of what I don't want in order to get what I do want. The HD picture is much sharper than any I've seen..
Don't know and haven't heard much about Direct.

There is no contest. Direct TV is the best. It has more HD, is more reliable and is the most honest with promises.

We are moving down this fall, have had basic Comcast in our villa which we've been renting out for 4 years. No problems at all with Comcast, although the price is up to around $65/mo but we are huge OSU, Cleveland Indians, and Cincinnati Reds fans and they had no real options

So - when Ohioboy checked the options with Dish and Direct TV, he felt the only option was Dish - to get a package with the Big Ten network, SportsTime Ohio and Fox Sports Ohio - all necessities as far as he is concerned. We are planning on having it installed this fall, to take advantage of whatever freebies they are currently offering.

From everything I've read before on this site, seems like it will be a good idea to check out all the options (Comcast, Direct TV and Dish) again, just to try to beat down the price. We already have DSL internet thru CenturyLink, and a land line, and will probably get the triple threat package. The DSL has been fine - we have one of the higher, but not the highest, speeds (I think).

My only real concern is where they will want to put the dish, as I am NOT going to have it be the focus of my view from the lanai.

Have no fear, Ohio girl....they place it on the corner of your home and I have never seen it placed where it obstucts your view.
