The perfect combination for a window box or hanging planter is to have a thriller (tall in the middle) filler (to fill in the spaces around the thriller) and a spiller (to cascade over the side.

Take it from a cracker.....

Ice plant or similar varieties of succulents are my suggestion for planters and pots. The annuals are better color for the short term, but if you want something tougher and for the long haul in a planter, succulents all the way.

The windows do face south however we just had awnings installed over them so therefore they are still getting plenty of sun but a little shade also let's see how I do now with the lantanas and the calipetite I just planted in them

I had posted earlier that Vinca might be a great flower for your window box. Here's a picture of our Vincas as they grow in our landscape. These come up year after year.
