Default Need recommendation for Dental Insurance

Cancelled my dental coverage because it only covered preventative dental needs. Any thoughts or experience regarding a decent plan for dental coverage? Thank you...

We have United Concordia thru DW's last employee (part of retirement package). They cover our needs rather well.

We use AARP Delta dental. None are perfect, but we are satisfied.

I got some good advice many years ago not to think of it as dental insurance. Think of it as dental assitance, because for the reasons you mentioned it mostly covers only preventative issues.

You really need to compare the yearly cost of dental insurance as opposed to the actual costs you incur with your dentist. Since there is usually a maximum that the insurance will pay (typically $1000 or so per year) and they will only cover a percentage of each procedure, sometimes it's less expensive in the long run to just pay out of pocket. Dental insurance can be quite handy when it is a benefit provided by an employer but many times it can be not worth the expense. Check out what the monthly premiums are, what the coverage is for procedures and what is the maximum they will pay each year. Then check with your dentist to see how much he/she charges for routine visits.
