What generally seems to be common practice in TV is to purchase "termite protection" for an annual cost. The company comes out (usually once a year) and inspects for termites. If none found, nothing else happens. If they are found, they treat and (depending on your contract) repair damage. Every so often they retreat (5 years or so???). $150 year sounds in the ball park from what I have seen.
This part is important, keep the same company year-to-year. If you purchased a pre-owned home, you can call Warranty Dept. and find out who had the previous termite contract and possibly continue to use them. Companies are reluctant to come in and take over providing protection after some other company has provided it for a period of time. They will insist on a full inspection and treatment using "their stuff" which makes it initially expensive to you. That's why the "stick with one company" advice - it gets a little expensive to jump companies.
