Insulate refrigerator in the garage??
 

Has anybody put any kind of insulation around their refrigerator in the garage?

I am getting ready to measure ours and think there are two (at least) options. One; fiberglass insulation blanket on top, both sides and part way down the back. Second: ditto using styrofoam (1- 2" thick??).

What have you done or suggest?

we just put a reg one in our garage, no insulate, just plugged it in.

Don't have any insulation on the outside of mine.
Is it really worth the effort?

And....it probably runs all the time in July, Aug. and Sept. The heat in a garage will make it work much harder to maintain temperature and if you insulate it, it can only help the wear and tear on it not to mention your electric running it to overcome the blazing heat. Hot water tanks do great in the summer in the garage but freezers or frig's don't.

One caution...if you do add insulation, you may have a problem with condensation on the covered surface of the refrigerator, particularly on the freezer side. This is because that surface will be cooler than it normally is. The insulation (even foam) can then absorb the moisture and become useless. It may be possible to seal against the moisture, but it will be difficult. Even without the added insulation, refrigerators and freezers in the garage tend to get wet under some conditions.

I always had a refig in the garage for the past 13 years here in FL ... all my friends around in Fl all have one in the garage also...no one seemed to have any problems! just saying

I appreciate all the comments. We have had a refrigerator in garages forever (it seems) and one in the garage here for the last 8 years.

I agree with all who said so....no problems. However, IF, there is an opportunity to make it more efficient, run less, cost less, why not?

It is not a page one project but one that is on the list.
