Angry Watch Your Butt!!

Quote:
A carelessly tossed cigarette butt ignited a blaze Sunday at the entrance to the Village of Pinellas.

The butt landed in the landscaping, setting off a fire and causing smoke at the entrance off County Road 466A near Pinellas Plaza.

Conditions are very dry due to the lack of rain. The Southwest Florida Water Management District recently declared a Phase 1 Water Shortage. You can read more about that HERE

That story also ran in this mornings' Sun Newspaper, so you can quote that.

I saw a similar fire about 2 weeks ago on the medium island at 466A and BV. I reached for my cellphone to call Villages Community Watch and realized I didn't know their number. I have since made a label tape of the phone number and put it under the arm rest in my car.

John - why call community watch? Why not the fire department? Just wondering.

You watch her butt? Teach her how to field strip it.

I see it on C4 in the "Local News" section (3-21-2017) in about 75 words by Leah Schwarting.

I smoke. I would no more throw a butt (lit or otherwise) out than I would toss a dog out. I've seen the fires a lit butt can start and the damage it can do. I've never understood smokers who think it is okay to toss butts out. You can buy butt buckets at the dollar stores. You can field strip a butt. You can make sure the cigarette is fully out and put the butt in your pack. There is absolutely no excuse for littering.

Okay, off my high horse and back to the rocker.

My friend usually does pick these up but sometimes forgets and then I will get some of them and toss them once I am sure they are out.

Driving home from golf last week on Buena Vista trail I saw smoke, and first thought someone was overly bar-b-queing. Then I saw the flames under the hedge. We U turned and my dear husband tried to stomp it out with his golf towel while I called 911. A quick thinking and limber fellow villager stopped and leaped over the fence to get into the yard backing the MMP, and borrowed someone's hose to spray out the fire. The fire was almost out by the time the fire dept got there.

That fire was spreading very fast due to the wind and would have reached the house within minutes.

As we were spreading the ashes making sure we didn't have any embers we found a butt had perhaps blown into the dry leaves under the hedge on the edge of the multi use path. I suspect smokers think if they drop a lit butt on the pavement it will eventually burn out, but with the winds these butts don't stay on the pavement.
