Hi again. We go to closing on Tuesday (11th) and will need to arrange to get our "stuff" brought down from Maryland. We followed your advice and got rid of almost everything, except for what is in a 7.5' x 10' EZ Storage bin. Although it would be cheaper, I'd rather not drive a U-Haul down at my age, but might have to. In checking with movers such as 2 Men & a Truck, their estimate was at least $7,000 to 10,000. Our "stuff" isn't worth that much. Any ideas?

We did it ourselves after getting high estimates, no guaranteed arrival time and horror stories about damage. We chose to rent from Penske rather than U-Haul. We've gotten some pretty bad U-Haul trucks in the past. The Penske truck was in excellent condition.

We hired two guys on each end to help load and unload. They asked for $100 each; we tipped them more because their service was worth more to us.

We came from Minnesota and the trip was easier than anticipated. One caution: Try to stay out of Atlanta. Traffic was horrid. A nightmare.

We've not used them, but you might want to check on what it would cost to have a POD moved down here. If everything fits in your storage bin, it would probably fit just fine in a POD. The estimate you got was really high..... we paid just over $10K for half a semi load, including a car in the trailer with the rest of our "stuff". You can find guys on each end to help load and unload a POD.

I had a great experience with PODS. You load, they move, you unload. If memory serves an 8' x 16' from CT was $2,300. We had it in CT few weeks and here for 2 days. Nothing broken.

Hi we used a great guy, Bruce Ice, in the papers, he moved us here from the West Coast because he was doing a delivery there, and brought our stuff back, including our car in closed van, no driving, no motels and we are non drivers,,,,,,,,,,,, yuk. Bruce is great, check the papers for his number or he lives in Tavares, nearby.

If using one of the pod-type containers, I would suggest not using the POD brand. Call United. Their actual container is stronger and a far superior built unit.

We have moved twice with container type moving -- first with the POD brand and then with United. Big difference! We would never use POD again.

We moved from Abingdon, MD (Baltimore suburb) in 2011 and we had 77 boxes and an almost new king bedroom set. We called Hampden Movers in Abingdon and they came over and gave us an estimate of $3400. The day before closing they came and picked up everything and moved it to their warehouse. They called later and said, they weighed our freight and it would only be $2700.

We closed in Maryland on the last day of June and drove down to TV, but with the 4th of July holiday we couldn't close in TV for a week. We stayed at the Holiday Inn at Spanish Springs, our Villages salesman Tony Trussler got us a special rate of $79. When we had closed and moved in, Hampden Movers sent our stuff on a United Van Lines truck. They had 3 families onboard, a South Carolina, ours and one in Tampa. Everything arrived fine and we paid the driver upon delivery. I was amazed they brought the biggest moving truck I have seen into our courtyard villa community, and were on the last street. The movers did all the loading and unloading of the truck, we just watched on both ends.

We moved from Mass. and used ABF (it's national). You rent space by the foot in a trailer that is coming to FL. You have 3 days to load it and 3 days to unload it. We had friends, relatives and neighbors help us load it and got 2 high school football players to unload it. Our neighbors just used them to move to Reno NV and they said they saved $2000 over all other estimates. You only pay for footage you use and you lock a wall off separating your stuff from other things being shipped. We had our closing at 9:30am and trailer pulled in at 1pm same day.
We had loaded it the week before and they held our stuff til we needed it without having to pay for 2 moves like some companies insisted on. Good luck.

I didn't mention ABF (Arkasas Best Freight) in my post above because the OP said at their age they didn't want to deal with U-Haul. We had also looked into ABF and they have cubes, which is similiar to PODS but are slightly smaller. When we priced ABF, I was going to need four cubes, which holds what 3 PODS will hold, and it would cost $2700 plus we would have to do all the loading and unloading ourselves. There was also some storage needed since we weren't able to close right away. The United Van Lines mover charged us $2700 and we didn't do any labor other than pack boxes. So that's why we went Hampden Movers, but I was ready to go with ABF if they had been cheaper. Using ABF partial truck was a little more involved than their cubes and with 77 boxes and a bedroom set I just felt safer with cubes. I'm moving from Temecula, CA to Calumet Grove (in The Villages) in a couple of months. Did you happen to move from someplace near Temecula? I would love to know how to get in contact with Bruce. I'm not sure if I understand the words you are using. They probably have to do with someplace in or near the villages. Thank-you!

I love the Temecula area and all of the golf nearby.

Up until 10 years ago, I would visit my buddy in Newport Beach numerous times a year and we would get two rounds in a day on the Temecula area courses...even though it was a bit of a drive.

One of my all-time favorite holes is still the 18th at Eagleglen (a little ways up I-15 from Temecula), where there is something like a 100' (?) drop from tee to fairway.

I also feel that I am an equity owner in Pechanga, given that I helped it grow from an oversized quonset hut...to a Las Vegas style resort & casino.

Anyway, although you may miss seeing mountains...welcome to The Villages.
