huh, I was going to tease you about it, because I remembering reading it, and now I can't find it either????????????

is this for kids/grandkids or you??

anyway, I like both

Homosassa Springs (manatees and an incredible bird island, which this time of year should be nesting and such,, 100s of different birds) and also

Gatorland (tons of gators, which I think are cool, and a different type of bird sanctuary with a boardwalk built in the trees, just east of Disney on Orange Blossom Trail)

I also like Fort DeSoto State Park south of Tampa at the end of the key, the fort is really interesting (Spanish American War) and there is a ferry twice daily out to an small island where you can see "stuff" (I've not done that yet, but I think it's a turtle sanctuary and birds - I like birds LOL)

Mount Dora is a nice day out - only 50 miles away.

I am going to try the Appleton museum in Ocala next month.

Dunnelin is nice also.

It might be a little far, but the Bok Sanctuary near Lake Wales is well worth the trip especially spring thru summer.

Golfnut,

How about an airboat ride, just 20 minutes from The villages. There is Horseback riding very close also thru the Ocala forrest.

Or you can go to the Virginia Trace Website http://Virginiatrace.com for a listing of Casino and other day trips.

Unless you mean round trip....Mt Dora is only 24.6 miles from Lady Lake.

Try this one, but there is also another.

What are some fun, interesting day trips you can make from the Villages?

There is the obvious stuff in Orlando like Universal, Disney, Sea Worldetc

A few other considerations:
  • Florida Carriage Museum (20 minutes)
  • Renninger's Antique Mall and Flea Market in Mt Dora (30 minutes)
  • there are several interesting things to do in Tarpon Springs (1.5 hours away) including sponge diving, fishing, etc.
  • manatees around Crystal River (1 hr)
  • Daytona Speedway and Daytona Beach (1.75 hrs)
  • Cypress Gardens (1.75 hrs)
  • a different way to see the Orlando area is in a hot air balloon, for example
  • Silver Springs in Ocala
  • Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing near Ocala

If you are interested in aviation:
  • Kennedy Space Center

If you are interested war birds:

Default Day Trips from The Villages

We recently went on a day trip by bus through AAA, & it was most convenient and enjoyable. We went to see Johnny Mathis perform at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater, FL. Our driver & tour guide couldn't have been better. Check out AAA's schedule. You don't have to be a member to attend their trips.

Last Saturday we spend the day in Winter Garden. Every few weeks we like to visit a different central Florida community. Winter Garden was charming. We had brunch in a French restaurant and there were many restaurants I would love to try on future visits. There are a few shops and an open air market. It was fun walking around this beautiful town. We noticed many people on bicycles which is a major draw to this area.
