i believe the increased drilling is on private land, and has not been approved on any govt controlled property. we have vast lands which could be drilled to keep us energy independent but the govt will not promote it.

Simple economics.
they could have competed when prices were higher per barrel, which is why OPEC has allowed the prices to drop drastically. price fixing is not generally part of the "open market".

The offshore drilling is not on private land. Same for the Arctic lands.

Yep, and Obama attempted to illegally ban drilling in the gulf, even after the Supreme court told him that it he was doing so illegally. Kind of hard for business to compete when the gov is blocking everything you do with more and more restrictions. Some restrictions are understandable when it comes to safety, but when politicians have an agenda that is not consistent with Free Enterprise, then gov becomes tyranny.
