Agreed. He should get his swing speed checked and then a set of used clubs with the proper shaft for his swing speed. I suggest something oversized and cavity backed. A wide sole would be advantageous as well.
Then, get some lessons and hit some range balls a couple weeks.
He needs to be swinging somewhat consistently to get properly fit.
