I told people to stop feeding a big gator at Sumter because it was against the law and bad news for the gator. You would have thought I had insulted the one guy's mother since he responded with a nasty comment (right in front of his kids)

People do no like to be told what to do or not to do by anyone other than authority. People view the admonisher as the Self-Appointed (
Fill in the appropriate word) Police. You're not going to change that person's behavior, and you will usually get the response you got. Public education works better, IMO.
