We have tile in the kitchen and bathrooms and a high grade laminate in the living room and dining room and hallways. I think it is important if you go with a laminate that you go with a high grade (ours is a 12 grade). You also may need an area rug somewhere in the room to cut down the echo. I have been in homes where they didn't get a high grade and your heels click. Ours is a light cherry with a piano finish. We have had it about 5 years already and it looks like brand new. I clean it with a microfiber mop and a tiny spritz of water (hardly any). A neighbor of ours has engineered hardwoods and they look great also.
