As far as degenerative diseases being hereditary, sometimes they appear to be but what is often inherited are poor lifestyle habits. People often follow family traditions and habits. Here's a link to an interesting article about a genetic fault in an Italian family. Despite a high fat diet and high cholesterol, they have a specific gene that overcomes the effect of the cholesterol.
