Autotrain
Sanford-Lorton is the only autotrain route. I've done it several times. Don't expect to get much sleep. A first class ticket gets you a tiny roomette with a miscule bathroom. It's private, but you still rock and roll all night. A parlor car ticket typically comes with noisy passengers (perhaps a screaming baby and restless kids going to Disney), uncomfortable seating and a bathroom facility that gets disgustingly filthy about three hours into your overnight trip. Autotrain ain't cheap, either. For the wife and I, flying and renting a car for a week-long trip to the mid-Atlantic area doesn't cost a lot more.
