In any event, it sounds like at least one of you is very undecided about having a pet. Please think very carefully before adopting one. This isn't something that can be done cavalierly. People adopting or buying because they want "arm candy" (and I'm not saying that's you at all) are one of the reasons there are so many pets in the rescue centers. I have personal experience with it with a couple of friends, and it is a very sad situation for the dogs and cats.
They require a large expenditure of time and money--socialization, training, health maintenance, and care while you're gone when you can't take them with you. It's one of the reasons the rescue places are so strict in vetting possible adopters. You can't throw these pets out if it doesn't work out, and they really want to find committed people to take these pets in.
