You do understand (maybe) that there are extremely compelling reasons why sanctuary status has been utilized? And that law enforcement on a local level is supportive of that status? What is the big complaint heard about the ability of cops to get information about crimes? No one will talk to them. If you can't get the witnesses to a crime to talk, no crimes get solved. When a beat cop is required to assess the immigration status of all of his contacts and arrest for deportation any person who is found to be here illegally, that cop is not going to be able to investigate any crime involving a lot of people. When a woman is here undocumented and she is a victim of a crime, whether by an undocumented person or a legal person, she cannot go to the police for help if the cops are going to instead arrest her, and a violent criminal goes free. So to help with local crime enforcement many cities have decided that they WANT the cooperation of their community in crime reporting and crime solving. If they are instead going to be immigration detectives then the cooperation of the community will not exist. Thus the decision not to act as ICE agents in their daily operations. Comprende amigo?
