Facebook friends are supposedly just the people in your immediate family and the like. You can share other less personal things with different kinds of "friends".
It seems to be actually a great tool for activism and the like but I would never share stuff with people walking out-and-about like with Facebook as you never know who you are talking to if you start sharing stuff on some square in the Villages.
