That first year with a new dog will take your mind off of what you've lost. And then everything just proceeds from there. Crosby was born the day Bear, our first golden, died. The car became full of discarded Kleenex, and I finally said to my husband, I can't take this anymore. He preferred to give the grieving process time but had the goodness of heart to agree to another puppy. It's been 7 years and we still miss Bear, but Crosby is firmly entrenched in our home.
Heck, I still miss our 20-year-old cat Fletcher, who died in 1990. Best cat ever. Acted like a dog. Followed me everywhere. Sigh.
