I often find the sewer clean out cap on the side or front of the house broken during a typical warranty inspection. Landscapers often break these and never tell the homeowner. Snakes and frogs can then go down the pipe and come up into the toilet. It happens quite often.
If you find a critter in your toilet, sink or shower drain check your sewer clean out. A new cap can be bought at Ace or any big box store for around $3 or $4 dollars. They just screw on.
I personally prefer the type with a slot in it instead of the large square nut. It does not stick up as high so the landscapers have less chance of hitting it again. It is also a good idea to clamp some hardware cloth around those roof vent pipes if you really want to minimize this occurring. That being said, I think this happens more from a broken sewer clean out....but it IS another reason to keep trees away from your roof....especially those palm trees landscapers plant WAY too close to the house, but that is a subject all in itself.
