Like and Dislike buttons or thumbs-up and thumbs-down buttons tally and show the number of people who react one way or the other. Posters chased out by bullies ought to see that often, many others are with them but won't stick their face out to be slashed publicly by commenting.

My point, if you're willing to see it, was that the emoticons
do not tally and show agreement or disagreement as other blogs do when having Like and Dislike buttons, or thumbs up and down buttons. The only thing the worshiping and mocking emoticons do is bolster certain "key" people, and put down many others.
Plus, Mikeod is right about a "Who Cares?" button. People state their opinion--the purpose of a blog--and they get attacked if it's not the opinion of the ringleaders. It's cliquish.
