Re: Eliot Spitzer's fall
I tend to agree with the somewhat negative comments regarding the Royal Eliot. I thought his sole purpose in his actions as Attorney General was to promote Eliot Spitzer. His aim was to become Governor and only to use that as a stepping stone. His tactic was to attack the evil money grubbers of the NYSE. As Steve said, he attacked people who did nothing illegal but whose actions violated Eliot's sense of political correctness. And he threatened prosecution of anyone who questioned his tactics. He sued Dick Grasso because he felt Grasso had been paid too much. He didn't sue A-Rod because he got a huge salary from the Yankees. He didn't sue Barbra Streisand because she made multi-millions from her various "Very Last Concert Tours". But he did sue the head of the NYSE because he had, years before, negotiated a favorable but not unheard of pay package.
I don't begrudge Spitzer having his whores. I did find it amazing that he said "I have acted in a way that violates my obligations to my family, and violates my -- or any -- sense of right and wrong. I apologize first and most importantly to my family. I apologize to the public, whom I promised better." But he, the former Attorney General and as Governor, the chief law enforcement officer of his state, does not admit to or apologize for breaking the law. And I guess it's not shocking that he spent over $80,000 on hookers. That's a lot of money for me. I probably didn't spend near that much on prostitutes in the nine years I lived in Germany. But Eliot is much richer than us mere mortals. At least, as far as we know, he did not following in the footsteps of his neighbor Jim McGreevey by making one of his bimbos NY Director of Homeland Security.
