When I first arrived in The Villages i was astonished to see Happy Hour advertised as starting at 3:00 p.m. on a couple of signs. Then at Katie Belles it was all day, price wise. I noticed rather early (pre noon) drinking as well.

I believe a lot of retired people gradually slip into drinking before 5:00 p.m. or whatever used to be their after work happy hour time. It happens all over, not just in The Villages although the environment in TV seems to be conducive to anytime drinking. Alcohol abuse among the elderly is a problem today, not to mention both prescription and street drug abuse in addition to their interaction with ingested alcohol. It might be due to depression, loneliness, feelings of loss, boredom or for other reasons. Addiction Medicine - Medical Consequences - Elderly Alcohol and Substance Abuse
