Once was in the boonies in California. After driving around for well over an hour trying to follow my friend's detailed directions, I was on the verge of giving up and going back home. (This was before cell phones and GPSes.) I hadn't seen a soul during this hour. I finally spotted a kid on a bike and asked where I was and how to get to my destination. He looked at my directions and just started laughing. Turns out that the big tree and the rooster mailbox had been knocked down a few days before. I was about fifteen miles off course. with his new directions and new landmarks, which included a spotted dog chained to the dog house and the house with the yellow door and shutters, I did succeed in finding my way.
