I used to ride bikes a lot. It was actually safer to share the road with cars than it was the trails with walkers, dogs, other bikes, etc. Today, I would use the trails if I had to ride near a main thoroughfare -- I'm not as good nor as fast as I used to be. For just tooling around where there is little traffic, I would probably be on the street.
Drivers need to remember that the rule is 3 feet from bikes. If you can't pass at a safe distance, then stay behind until you can. Most bike riders are considerate and will move over for you as soon as they can safely do so. Most drivers do try to give bikes sufficent room but a little bit of patience would help.
