I thought it was quite clever and creative. However, was every of second of video shot by him, or someone he appointed to shoot it for him? If not, then perhaps that was a reason for the firing. Using footage belonging to someone else, or owned by the company, is technically a crime. It's no less a crime than pirating songs or movies from the internet.
