I don't think it is not caring so much as relief it didn't affect our loved ones or area. Sadly, it is very much part of human nature. It is rubbernecking at an accident site. It is the relief a coalminer's wife feels when she sees her husband after a cave-in. You're sorry it happened but grateful it didn't happen to you. Also, the more often things occur, the more we build up defenses to relieve the pain. The entire nation grieved after Columbine. Most of us were sickened or saddened after the school shooting up north. We were shocked and angered at McVeigh's actions in Oklahoma City. We were devastated after 9-11. Now, we sigh, feel bad for a short while and continue with our lives. And that may be the best revenge of all -- we keep on going regardless.
