You have part of your answer by the responses given following your original post. Its called "a short attention span" There are unfortunately not enough deep thinkers in America any longer. In fact I have said in the past that educational institutes teach our kids to emote but not to think. The episodes recently at a number of universities wherein the students demand "safe spaces" is an unfortunate result .
Hence a shooting these days or any political or social issue for that matter means to many to emote, then blink, then deflate but never to follow the issue to the negative affect the issue has on society as a whole.
Another reason, too many people don't understand that life is a series of trade offs and the best a person can do is prioritize those trade offs. Coupled with the need to trade off these same people do not understand the application of Occam's Razor (ie the simplest answer is the answer) as they too often go chasing rainbows.
Another reason, too many people do not understand that nature has limits. For instance they don't understand that money really doesn't grow on trees.
Another reason, like our politician who don't read , absorb ,etc before voting too many posters ignore what has been written or dismiss it because their opinion is all that matters. You witnessed that with your post because they did not counter point or even elaborate on post
Like you I am becoming weary and frankly wary of posting on political talk because there are just not a sufficient number of deep thinkers willing to point counter point and unfortunately far too many jesters.
