You might not view it as a socialist program but it is because you can pay into all your working life and not collect the total amount you contributed or you can receive more money than you contributed.
Then there are the people who are means tested and don't get a dime.
You could have taken your money and invested it for yourself, that by definition is capitalist but instead the Federal Government took your money and put it in a big pot for all to share.....= socialist.
