According to the Merriam-Webster on line dictionary "elderly" was first used in 1611 so the term has been in the English language over 400 years.
My father described himself and his peers as elderly after he reached about age 70. Elderly seems to be an acceptable descriptor to me. Refer to the folks at the gates as elderly but please do not describe them as senescent. That would bother me.
