It is the perception that matters and influences people. For example if open carry is permitted and I walk into a coffee shop and 3 different people are carrying side arms, I'll go to another shop.

I did not say what their gender was, race, how they were dressed, clean cut, religion----all that makes a difference in perception.
You would walk the other way because you are a coward. Nothing personal, just an observation. Because most people that legally carry a weapon are responsible gun owners. In stead of feeling safer in that coffee shop, like you should feel, you are scared that a gun would accidentally go off, injuring you. You obviously do not know how many people in your community carry guns every day that you do not know about. I have carried a gun for many years, professionally and otherwise. No one has every known I was carrying. I have probably walked right past you, possibly more than once. You didn't know, but you should be grateful, because I would have protected you if you ran into trouble. Trouble that you would be unequipped to handle on your own. And instead of protecting your family as you should, people such as myself will hopefully be around to do it for you. A gun is just another tool. Since our country has become more and more lax regarding enforcement and justice, one has to be constantly vigilant regarding personal safety/security. The police are unable to protect you and the best you can hope for is that they are not too busy elsewhere to come and assist with first aid and reporting the incident if it should occur. I have no problem with those that are scared of weapons and do not wish to handle them, but I do have problems with those that want to ban other folks from protecting their families. I find such folks to be seriously selfish.

Regarding the carrying of weapons in a convention. I do not think that it is a good idea, considering the inflammatory nature of the venue. Police and security officers are paid to put up with abusive conflict without resorting to spontaneous violence. Not so for the average civilian. Where most folks are responsible gun owners, if someone was to be threatening them by getting into their face and screaming, that may cause fear and alarm and that person may fear for his safety, which might then lead to a thoughtless act of brandishing a gun. I am not saying that his is common, but it's possible in a heated environment. I can understand why they would not want gun owners to carry in this kind of forum. Just because I could carry concealed in such a place without feeling the need to use it, does not meant that others have my background. If one NEEDS to carry a gun to give them confidence, then they are carrying it for the wrong reason. If you fear attending this function without a gun then you shouldn't be attending. It means that you are not prepared to handle the environment without a confidence bolster.
