Yes you have to submit a request from the Architectural Committee! And if they allow it you have to replace it wth another "canopy tree" (shade tree) They will send out an arborist to look at it. They let us cut our rather large one down, only because the roots were making our sidewalk buckle! The Villages had planted it too close to the house. We did love the shade it gave us as we face west. But You have to get permission otherwise face a what probably is a big fine and you better make sure you replace it with something they approve of.
