One major reason that it took time to get enough political pressure to end slavery once the Federal Gvt came into being and developed some " footing " was due to the fact that the US was basically a Nation made up of small family farms .
Most people had at best an 8th grade education . Newspapers did not have wide circulation . The far majority of people in the North had never seen a Black person let alone a slave .
They learned of this deplorable human condition from their local Preacher on Sunday Mornings . Most of the Northern farm boys who went off to fight the South thought that they were going on some grand adventure that would last only a few weeks and would enhance his standing in his home community and church .
