Most people had at best an 8th grade education . Newspapers did not have wide circulation . The far majority of people in the North had never seen a Black person let alone a slave .
They learned of this deplorable human condition from their local Preacher on Sunday Mornings . Most of the Northern farm boys who went off to fight the South thought that they were going on some grand adventure that would last only a few weeks and would enhance his standing in his home community and church .

That's a very American strategy until some caught on. The sons of the elite and the very clever stayed behind [except for the Mccanns]. Now we just send the unfortunate sons of the unfortunate fathers and pretend we are brave and patriotic.
