At our age (assuming you have a tall enough ladder to start with), having someone replace smoke alarm batteries isn't such a bad idea.
Someone once told me that you can call the fire department and they will do it, but I've never tried it so don't know if it's true.

Yes, the fire department will change your smoke detector batteries. You must provide the batteries and a ladder.
