You can google florida crosswalk laws. As I read it, the pedestrian must yield to traffic until it is safe to enter the crosswalk. Then the pedestrian has the right of way. At intersections with walk/don't walk signals, the law gives pedestrians the right of way when the light prompts them to walk.
I appreciate your intent to be kind but it seems you should have kept on going.
