South Africa has been a very violent place for many decades . If you ever spent any time there you would find that even in areas that might seem to look like Middle Class areas you will find bars on all windows .
Also the sleeping areas in those homes often are in effect " caged in " . This is to protect the family from home invasions during the night when they are asleep .
