These immersion classes often work.
I tried Chinese at the University of Minnesota. It would have taken a long time just to read a paragraph in a newspaper.
My great uncle would always recommend making a close friend who spoke the language. He kept on telling me to get a Spanish speaking girlfriend especially when we lived in Scottsdale, AZ.
