If she's not going to do anything I would make sure it has a full charge & leave it go, 5 months really isn't that long to leave a battery sit. It's better than charging it for 5 months, because it'll for sure be cooked. Yes you're right though I would put a discharger on it so it's charging & discharging all the time.
