Re: tatunka , Buffalo gone....
I know this thought is going to run contrary to what a lot of folks are saying about the buffalo, but I only wish they were going further away.
It's my understanding that TV developers are using the buffalo as a combination tax-dodge and tourist attraction. I believe the tax dodge portion could be accomplished with cows or sheep, both of which are closer to being "domestic" than buffalo, and would accomplish their aim to duck some taxes.
While I agree the novelty of seeing buffalo in FL was quite neat, and I for one did enjoy seeing them, they were only there temporarily anyway, so you'd have to say good-bye one day eventually. Once the build out was complete, and the need for maintaining the agriculture tax shelter disappeared, they'd be gone. I doubt there'd be free space enough for them once the building is through, or anyone left willing to maintain them.
If you've ever been to Yellowstone, and seen herds of these animals roaming wild by the hundreds, you appreciate where these creatures belong. These are not timid creatures accustomed to living on a farm. In Yellowstone, people (stupid people) pose standing with them all the time, and every year, someone (or 2 or more) get gored. The animals get annoyed, and fling you by their horns over their backs. They are wild animals and should be in the wild.
So in many ways I am sorry to see them go, as they are a novelty and neat to look at, but overall, for the animal's sakes, it's probably better they be somewhat isolated from people, particularly stupid people, and given as large a pasture as can be found.
If only they could go to Wyoming...
