Next step I would take would be to go to the computer manufacturer's website support page (Drivers and Downloads or similar) and see if they have an updated driver for your particular computer model.

If you retry your old driver as you say you'd like to, I would first read the link below on getting into safe mode just in case you loose your screen. You should be alright though.
