If you have an LCD monitor (as opposed to an older CRT), the first thing I'd check is that the resolution is set to the native resolution of the monitor (in Settings->System->Display->Advanced display settings). If you run an LCD at other than its native resolution you get pretty much what you describe (a bit fuzzy, things sized wrong, etc.). Beyond that, it does sound like Windows couldn't find a driver for your specific display adapter and so, substituted a generic driver. Ignore its claims about it being the best. Its just the best THAT WINDOWS COULD FIND IN ITS DRIVER DATABASE. Definitely look for a more up to date driver from the website of whomever manufactured your display adapter.
