Yes, at the time. For thousands of years, slavery, not only of Africans, was considered acceptable. Slaves were property, not people. Then as civilization "evolved" it was no longer acceptable and ex-slaves were now considered people and given equal rights. Same became true of women. Now it is true for gays as well.
So, at least in theory, all lingering prejudices aside, almost everyone is equal in front of a court.
