We added a ceiling fan about a year ago. I did this myself, as the wiring was close enough I did not have to wade through a lot of insulation. The inspector liked my work.
But back to your question, yes the ceiling fan makes a BIG difference, I would say go for it. We had a 2 ft extension to lower the fan 2 ft from the ceiling. Added LED lights so the bulb do not add to the heating load.
We centered the fan in the kitchen area, and shadows from the fan are minimal.
