I'll reinforce your recommendation that folks leave home a minimum of one day before their cruise, especially in the winter.
When I was in the travel business in St. Louis ('84-'02 or thereabouts) our policy was three-fold: 1) client must fly to the port of departure the day before the ship's sailing, and 2) for the most part, client must make separate airline arrangements [that is, not use the cruise lines' flights] because it was far more likely that non-stop service could be booked, and 3) always buy trip insurance, but virtually never from the cruise line!
I suspect somewhat different policies might apply today, except that regarding going the day before!
