Yes, you will save a lot of money (around $3600/year for two of us), however, our family recently had a medical procedure that totaled over $125,000 Medicare covered 80%, our supplemental plan covered very close to 20%, our cost was less than $300.
So what you say is true, as long as you are healthy, if not, then you have elected to be self-insured for the 20%, and if you have sufficient resources this will work. In the above example, without the supplemental plan we could have been on the hook for ~$25,000.
