You've mentioned Korea, Vietnam, Libya, Egypt, Iran, Afghanistan, Syria. There are books on each of them asking if they were necessary. Unfortunately, other than in sci fy we cannot explore what would have happened if we did or did not.
RE: what we spend on the military
Eisenhower warned to beware of the industrial military complex. Is it justified-reread my suggestion of sci-fy do-overs. We currently have 26 aircraft carriers-more than the entire rest of the world has. France has one.
That is a huge TARGET it has 2000 troops on it hundreds of airplanes and it can be sunk with ONE MISSAL. Marine grade paint is like $50 a quart. Paint on an aircraft carrier-beats me.
You mention mercenary army
As pointed out by TRUMP our alies ought to pay their FAIR SHARE. Our alies in the middle east wars, battles??????
We are paying the bulk of the costs and doing the bulk of the wounded and dead-like 80%. The few troops that France sent to Afghanistan arrived WITH NO AMMUNITION. Like you mooch friend that smokes your cigarettes as they have gotten too expensive or uses YOUR BALLS to play golf etc. We all use NATO SIZED AMMO so they USED OUR ....... The numbers are truly shocking when you discover the US gets very little oil from the middle east-our oil is domestically produced with imports mostly from CANADA and MEXICO. If, we made it OUR GOAL, we could become totally independent of middle eastern oil.
SADLY, I DO NOT HAVE THE ANSWERS BUT WE HAVE TRIED KUMBAYAH IT ONLY WORKED TILL THE EFFECT OF A JOINT WORE OFF.

We get paid back in control over those countries without a decent military. They depend on us...we have control. If I have all the weapons...where exactly IS your standing?
We want EVERYONE ELSE dependent on middle eastern oil. We "control" the middle eastern oil. We have them over a "barrel" again.
The joint is wearing off fast. It's time for action, or all is lost. Hispanics are 1/3 the population and growing fast, more than half the country gets a government benefit/welfare. Our ranking has gone from #1 to #17 due to quotas. We need to do something different for a change.
