Because of the unknown DNA on JonBenet's underwear and the evidence of entry via the basement window and evidence of the stun-gun marks on her neck and body, I would have to agree with the DA's outside investigator Lou Smit that an intruder committed the crime. The intruder watched the home waiting for the family to leave for the Christmas party. If they knew the bonus amount, then it makes sense they knew the family would be going to this Christmas party. Once inside the home, they had free roam and a lot of time to write the ransom letter.
Once the family returned, they waited in the basement until it was clear. They took their ransom letter and traveled upstairs to get JonBenet. She was stunned and then carried to the basement and the ransom letter was left on the steps. Once the child was in the basement, they attempted to place JonBenet in a suitcase and to lift her up through the window. When this became impossible, the intruder decided to have his wicked ways before killing the girl. He might of even taken her back to the kitchen to get the pineapple in order to be her friend. Then he fashioned the garrotte and then choked JonBenet to death.
