Allow me to explain an item on a tax return I'm not an expert but asked my CPA.

Trump had a loss of about 900 million, under the law he can offset any future profits for up to 20 years or less if it is all offset.

so if he made 900 million in say 8 years the Offset ends he pays regular tax again.

This offset is called a NOL Net Operating Loss carry forward.

It is 110% legal and he would be remiss not to use it, if he had investors in certain corps and had not used that write off they would hold him responsible.

Now we don't know how many years it took him to use it all up or if in fact he did use it all.

If he made no profit in 20 years the NOL expires

My accountant said he has over a dozen clients that utilize that option.
