I am not looking for vengeance on these two men as Graciegirl puts forth BUT just making a record of this so that this does not happen again that the Salvation Army gets wronged-- they and they people they help are the victim here-- by greedy dishonest RECYCLING people.
The garbage people were gone. I waited until after they were gone as I know they do take anything that is not in a recycling bag. The box was clearly marked SALVATION ARMY and was behind my car on the opposite side of the driveway from the recycling.
I do hope that this company gets wind of this complaint I have made. Even louder now that the naysayers have come on here to bicker about everything when they were not even there.

Just a thought: is it possible that your "SA" marking might have somehow been obscured during the time from when you set it out until the recycling guys showed up? Could it have been an innocent mistake?
